Free School Meals Programme

Get Golfing has a mission to use golf, our facilities and staff to make a real difference to their local communities. Our free school meals programme provides breakfast, golf and a hot lunch to children eligible to receive free school meals during term time and those that would not normally have access to golf. With two established schemes running throughout the year, we have now been able to deliver over 2000 hot meals to children in their local communities. As we move into 2023, we are excited to roll out these schemes across more of our sites, notably beginning with Redlibbets in March, and Warley Park in April.

Key Points so far:

  • Over 2000 hot meals have been delivered
  • More than 600 kids have participated in our programme
  • 30% of the kids were girls
  • 30% were from ethnic minority groups
  • 9% have had special educational needs

What are we doing?

Get Golfing are creating new opportunities to access golf in a safe and fun environment with food provision for those in need – totally free of charge. This includes the delivery of hot meals to the most disadvantaged children in our communities.

The programme offers breakfast and lunch to those children who would usually receive free school meals as well as giving them an enjoyable and different experience. Our trained staff run a range of activities throughout the day with a focus on learning the core elements of golf. Non golf related enrichment activities will also take place.

Why are we doing it?

Get Golfing would like to have a real and lasting impact on the communities closest to its sites. Get Golfing are a charity organisation that wants to be different. We have amazing spaces and facilities that can offer a unique provision by combining the delivery of great, healthy and hot food with golf and educational activities.

What we’ve achieved so far…

Following a successful trial period during Easter, Get Golfing have successfully rolled out and delivered their Free School Meals programme in the Summer 2022. The initiative has started at The Club at Mill Green, Hatfield and The Arkley 9, Barnet.

Throughout the summer Get Golfing have delivered over 2000 meals to over 600 kids aged between 5 and 17.

  • 30% of the kids were girls
  • 30% were from ethnic minority groups
  • 9% have had special educational needs

Get Golfing’s Head of Community Outreach, Stu Williams, said of the scheme “As a teacher, the provision of free school meals to those pupils that need them most is an issue close to my heart. Here at Get Golfing, we have an opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in our local communities, and most importantly help the children that need it most.”

What’s coming next?

We’re committed to making a real impact within our local communities with free golf and free food to those that need it most. Our term time Monday clubs deliver an hour of golf followed by a hot dinner and our 4 hour holiday camps deliver breakfast and a hot lunch alongside golf & other enrichment activities at our amazing venues. These camps are available to any child in receipt of free school meals.

Following the successful rollout of these camps at The Club at Mill Green and The Arkley 9 last summer, we have now moved into the next phase with a rollout at Redlibbets and Warley Park. This is a great step as the community team continue to deliver ‘More than just Golf’ to our local communities.
